AUGUSTAE

Nepalese hand-knotted carpet - 100 knot
100% Tibetan Wool + Chinese Silk
9 feet x 12 feet / 2.74 meters x 3.66 meters
raised silk pile on tiles

AUGUSTAE has two pile heights of wool and silk, cut and looped knots. The textured field is reminiscent of worn stucco walls. The worn-away Palmette border treatment was inspired by the "Ara Pacis Augustae" or Altar of Augustan Peace located in Rome.

The Ara Pacis was constructed in 13 BC as an offering to Pax - the Roman Goddess of Peace. Commissioned by the Senate to celebrate the Emperor Augustus' triumphant return from his military campaign in Gaul and Hispania, it is carved in Luna marble in a naturalistic style. The Palmette border is an ancient motif favoured by the Egyptians and Greeks.
